Clay’s Kitchen: The Best Place for Indian Food in Reading

If you are searching for exceptional Indian food in Reading, Clay’s Kitchen offers a dining experience that is both authentic and memorable. Known for its bold flavours, regional specialities, and warm hospitality, Clay’s Kitchen has built a reputation as one of the most exciting places to enjoy Indian cuisine in the area. With a strong focus on tradition, quality ingredients, and creativity, it stands out as a must-visit destination for food lovers.

A Dream Turned Reality

Clay’s Kitchen is the creation of chef-owners Nandana and Sharat, who turned their long-held dream of running a restaurant into reality. In 2017, they took a leap of faith by securing their own premises, and after months of hard work, they opened in June 2018. From the beginning, their mission has been clear: to bring authentic regional Hyderabadi food to Reading.

Their approach is rooted in passion and precision. Each dish is crafted using spices and ingredients sourced from India, carefully balanced with the best of local and British produce. What makes Clay’s truly distinctive is the attention to detail; every spice mix is unique to the dish it accompanies, ensuring a depth of flavour that feels both refined and genuine.

The menu reflects the rich culinary heritage of Hyderabad, from the opulent dishes once enjoyed by the Royal Nizams to the vibrant and equally delicious street food of the Andhra region. This storytelling through food creates an experience that goes far beyond the ordinary.

A Welcoming and Personal Atmosphere

One of the defining features of Clay’s Kitchen is its welcoming and intimate setting. Guests often describe the experience as feeling like they are being hosted by friends rather than simply dining out. This sense of warmth is a direct reflection of the passion and personality of Nandana and Sharat.

Since opening, the restaurant has received awards from local platforms and built a loyal following. Many customers return time and again, becoming familiar faces and forming a close connection with the team. It’s this combination of excellent food and genuine hospitality that makes Clay’s Kitchen feel truly special.

A Menu That Celebrates Flavour

Clay’s Kitchen offers a diverse menu filled with dishes that showcase the depth and variety of Indian cuisine. The selection of small plates is a great way to begin your meal, featuring options such as Indian-style hot pickles with cauliflower, green chilli, or chicken, and Phool Makhna with curry leaf masala. Light bites like corn ribs with signature spice powder and tapioca papad with Keralan onion chutney provide a perfect introduction to the bold flavours on offer.

Traditional favourites such as idli fingers with podi and peanut coconut chutney and aloo tikki chat deliver a satisfying combination of spice, tang, and texture. There are also inventive dishes like grilled chillies stuffed with rice and roasted chana dal and heirloom tomatoes with pachadi salad, which highlight the kitchen’s creativity.

For those looking for something unique, dishes like pork and octopus skewers with ginger, jaggery and tamarind glaze and miso chicken tikka skewers bring together unexpected flavour combinations while staying true to the restaurant’s roots.

The main courses are equally impressive. Standout dishes include bhuna venison slow-cooked in its own juices, Clay’s chicken ghee roast with its fiery and tangy profile, and saag paneer kofta in a creamy tomato sauce. Seafood lovers can enjoy grilled jumbo king prawns with savoury tokku, while hearty options such as braised beef short ribs with nalli nihari sauce provide rich and comforting flavours.

Rice and accompaniments play an important role in completing the meal. The lamb shank biryani is a highlight, while baghara rice, a Hyderabadi-style pulao, offers a fragrant and flavourful side. Guests can also enjoy a selection of breads, including John’s mixed basket of rotis, along with dishes like smoked tamarind dal for added depth.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many restaurants, Clay’s Kitchen faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a small and intimate space without outdoor seating, the team made the difficult decision not to reopen immediately. Instead, they adapted by bringing their food directly to customers’ homes.

They began offering a delivery service using a blast-chilling process, with dishes vacuum-packed and ready to heat at home. This innovative approach allowed them to maintain the quality and flavour of their food while reaching a wider audience. After a successful local trial, Clay expanded to nationwide delivery in August 2020.

This new venture received widespread praise, including recognition from well-known food critics such as Jay Rayner, Tom Parker Bowles, and William Sitwell, further cementing Clay’s reputation for excellence.

A Dining Experience for Everyone

In July 2021, Clay’s Kitchen reopened its doors after sixteen months, introducing a refreshed menu that combines beloved classics with new creations developed during its closure. The addition of a carefully curated wine list, designed by consultant Zeren Wilson, enhances the overall dining experience.

Today, Clay’s Kitchen continues to offer both a dine-in experience and a delivery service, ensuring that customers can enjoy its food whether they are visiting Reading or relaxing at home.
